SO THE QUESTION IS: WHAT EXACTLY IS THUMBSUCKING AND WHAT IS FINGER SUCKING?
Thumb and finger sucking are both very complex problems. They are the same, just different appendages. You have the physical motion of bending your arm and putting your thumb in your mouth causing a lot of physical damage to the teeth, jaw and palate. These can also lead to other problems like a speech impediment due to a strengthening of the tongue known as a tongue-thrust. You now have a total misalignment of their teeth. Handaid works at stopping the physical by keeping the Thumb & Fingers out and away from the mouth. Then you have the emotional problem; the emotional attachment that grows the longer you let the child suck their thumb/fingers. It is the emotional problem when left unaddressed that will be the most harmful to the child long term. That is why here at Handaid, we recommend that you start breaking this habit starting at 2 years of age.

STOP THE HABIT, NOT THE HAND.
The best way to cure your child’s habit is to incorporate a plan that focuses on the immediate problem only without causing another problem. Thumb/Finger sucking remedies are worthless if they interfere with the normal use of their thumb/fingers/arm and even worse, their hand. Tie your child’s hand behind their back and then tell them to go on with their normal day. The child is going to let you know immediately that they can’t use their hand and will continue to scream this information at you until you untie it. Well, this is what happens when you put most thumb or finger sucking devices on your child’s hand. Yes, they can’t suck their thumb/fingers. But, the bigger distraction is that they can’t use their thumb or fingers. The Handaid covers only the bottom two thirds of the thumb/fingers. The top third is uncovered so your child can hold a pencil, a spoon, type on their iPad/computer or use a cell phone. The only thing they can’t do is suck their thumb/fingers. Your child adapts to the custom fit quickly and the only time that they know that it is there is when they try to thumb/finger suck. This is just one of Handaid’s unique features which helps put your child on the fast track to a thumb or finger sucking cure.

IS THE HANDAID GLOVE SAFE COMPARED TO OTHER PRODUCTS?
Handaid is designed to keep the hand away from the mouth. If the instructions are followed correctly the child will be unable to remove it. Handaid can be hand washed or gentle cycle in cold water and remember to air dry only. Tguard and other devices made of plastic all have 1 fatal flaw that they have yet to address. FACT: that you cannot sterilize plastic. The plastic cannot withstand the high temperatures needed for sterilization. The only way you can kill germs on plastic is with chemicals and sanitizers. That’s why all plastic syringes are disposable after 1-time use. You can’t just rinse these devices off once-a-day and put it back on your child’s hand. Moisture gets trapped behind the plastic and it cannot evaporate. Just like your child’s saliva, tap water also has germs in it. Those germs start multiplying again and can cause irritations to the skin behind the plastic which if left untreated can turn into a staph infection. Because the Handaid is designed to keep the hand away from the mouth, you can squirt or spray sanitizers onto the Handaid surface because the child’s hand will not be going anywhere near their mouth. Those chemicals can be washed off the Handaid. So please, do not spray/squirt hand sanitizers onto any plastic device which is designed to work in the mouth. The chemicals that are used in those products should not be ingested by anyone. So it’s your choice: The Handaid or something made out of plastic.

THERE ARE OTHER DEVICES ON THE MARKET THAT COST LESS. WHY SHOULD I BUY THE HANDAID GLOVE?
One of the advantages of being a quality-priced product is that we become the last thumb/finger sucking product that you have to purchase. After you’ve tried all the other cheap devices that, for some reason, just did not work. Remember, those other devices only cost less than ours… if they work. Our products are for informed parents that take these habits very seriously. Every new customer tells us every problem they had with the last products(Tguard, Nipit, Thumster etc.) they used. They hold us to a higher standard for all of those reasons and we always accept that challenge. One of the many reasons why our product has a 99% success rate is because we can adapt by learning from the mistakes of our competition.
-
DO I TAKE THE HANDAID GLOVE OFF MY CHILD WHEN HE GOES TO SCHOOL OR DAYCARE?
No! The Handaid will not work if you are going to only use it occasionally. The Handaid stays on your child’s hand 24/7 until your child has lost their dependency on thumb/finger sucking. You have a variety of color tones that you can choose from so that the Handaid is less noticeable to other children.
-
EVERYTHING THAT WE HAVE TRIED IN THE PAST HAS NOT WORKED BECAUSE MY CHILD WAS ABLE TO REMOVE IT. HOW DOES THE HANDAID GLOVE STAY ON?
The Handaid has a patented child-proof closure system which the child cannot open without adult assistance.
-
WHAT DO I DO IF MY CHILD STARTS TO SUCK THEIR OTHER THUMB OR FINGERS?
Your child is using their early problem solving skills to find a suitable replacement for the appendage they can no longer suck upon. It is very rare for any child to make the transition to the opposite thumb or any other appendage. Usually, they will get tired of having to do this. If they do continue to suck their other thumb, each order has two (2) Handaids and one can be placed on each hand. In the event that your child starts to suck their fingers after starting with the Thumb Handaid, we offer other Handaid devices to solve those problems.
-
HOW LONG DOES MY CHILD HAVE TO WEAR THE HANDAID GLOVE?
We have found that the longer your child has been thumb/finger sucking, the longer it takes to break the habit. The Handaid is worn for a minimum of 3 weeks (24/7), and then one additional week during sleeptime only.
-
IT'S ONLY BEEN A WEEK AND MY SON SEEMS TO HAVE LOST INTEREST IN HIS THUMB. SHOULD I TAKE IT OFF?
DO NOT BE FOOLED BY EARLY SUCCESS. The Handaid works; that is why we are the #1 thumb sucking deterrent in the world. Follow our guidance of wearing the Handaid for a minimum of 3 weeks to ensure your child never goes back to the habit.

MY CHILD IS ALREADY 8 YRS. OLD AND I CAN'T GET HIM TO STOP SUCKING HIS THUMB. THE ORTHODONTIST SAYS THAT HE NOW HAS CONSTRICTIVE BREATHING CAUSED FROM A TONGUE THRUST SITUATION FROM THE THUMB SUCKING. CAN THE HANDAID HELP MY CHILD?
The Handaid can definitely help. A displacement of the tongue and other problems like a tongue-thrust will, in most cases, disappear once the child gives up their habit. Tongue-thrust is a strengthening of the tongue caused by the child pressing their thumb against the roof of their mouth so they can relax their arm and shoulder. This strengthening of their tongue can lead to problems with their speech.

CONSULTING A PROFESSIONAL
When you search the internet for “how to stop sucking your thumb”, you find many directions that you can go for advice. Your child’s Pediatrician or Pediatric Dentist would be a better source of information for parents with children under the ages of 6. Keep in mind that Orthodontists and Dentists are somewhat at a disadvantage because their expertise is mainly with the permanent teeth not the primary(baby) teeth. They can offer you many solutions and dental products which will stop these habits. But all of them need to be and should only be attached/wired to”permanent” molars. Your 3 year old child still has most of their baby teeth. And, 3 years is the age when most parents start searching for solutions on how to stop thumb/finger sucking.

HOW DOES THE HANDAID GLOVE STAY ON, BECAUSE OUR SON HAS BEEN ABLE TO REMOVE EVERYTHING THAT WE HAVE TRIED IN THE PAST!!
The Handaid has a patented child-proof closure system which most children cannot open without adult assistance. And, we have a special closure system for older children if it becomes necessary.
